Can we call you from the bank?
Yes, for a variety of reasons.
Some examples of why we might call you include to:
- Make an appointment for an interview.
- Confirm, for security reasons, if you made a transaction from your online account.
- Let you know that you have a card waiting for you at the branch.
Can they pass off as a CaixaBank employee and call me?
Yes, fraudulent calls (vishing) are quite routine.
Cybercriminals are making their deceitful scams ever more sophisticated. The strategies they use include:
- Impersonating the phone number (Caller ID Spoofing) so it is the same as that of our bank's customer service centre.
- Knowing how our banking website works, which lets them guide you through the menus to achieve their goal.
- Using compelling arguments, such as helping you challenge a supposedly fraudulent charge.
How will cybercriminals try to scam me?
They will probably ask you for confidential information, such as your card number or online banking credentials, or use various excuses, such as reversing a charge and have you make the payment.
It is common for them to use instant payment systems such as BIZUM, or even ask you to make an ATM withdrawal using a code.
How does the scam involving a withdrawal with a code at an ATM work?
CaixaBank allows customers to take money out of an ATM using a personal code. This service, which offers great advantages to customers, is also a pretext that cybercriminals use to scam people.
The pretext is usually that someone is making a cash withdrawal at an ATM and to cancel it, you have to follow the steps they tell you. The cybercriminal will guide you through the online process to get you to authorise a new withdrawal and give them the personal code that you have received to make the withdrawal at an ATM.
